Outline background in Education
Having completed my degree in music in 1997, I did a P.G.C.E. in Secondary Music. As I was studying with the Open University I was actually teaching music as a long-term substitute teacher covering KS3 to A Level at Mt Lourdes Grammar, Enniskillen whilst completing the P.G.C.E.
Although I enjoy the classroom I did not feel it was exactly what I would like to do as a full time career, thus I did not apply for any permanent teaching posts and instead did a lot of cover teaching to allow me the freedom to work on creative projects for local youth and community organisations. I was, throughout the period. Also running ‘Vivace Music’ my own school of piano and musicianship.
Two years after the P.G.C.E. I went to York University and completed an M.A. After that I took up the post of Cultural Coordinator in South Ayrshire and within that post found my ‘professional niche’. At the completion of that contract I went back to Ireland and lectured on Performing Arts at the F.E. college and carried out more teaching in the Primary and Secondary sector. Since January 2007 I have been Creative Links/Arts Education Officer for East Lothian Council and am again full satisfied employing my education knowledge, creative skills and management abilities.
Using the internet for learning/educational context
Currently I use the internet to read up on case studies of exemplary arts education projects, I seek tried and tested resources, predominantly from cultural organisations, I am just now finishing an on-line course on PRINCE II to assist me with project management systems for arts education projects.
When writing a brief for an arts education project proposal I will always copy and paste appropriate extracts from LTScotland website and include links to useful websites when emailing teachers about forthcoming projects and activities.
Recently I have promoted to schools the use of www.getset.london2012.com to allow them link appropriate work to the Olympics.
What do I wish to get from this?
I would like to think that I shall broaden my awareness of what ‘tools’ there are for education on-line and also see it as an opportunity to network with a wide range of people working in the varied spectrum of education and learning.
